215 | 610 CONTEMPORARY Annual Juried Exhibition at Delaware County Community College

  • The Gallery at Delaware County Community College 901 S. Media Line Road Media, PA 19063 (map)

Each fall, The Gallery at Delaware County Community College selects an accomplished artist or curator to jury 215 | 610 CONTEMPORARY, an annual juried exhibition showcasing regional emerging artists living in and around the Philadelphia area. The purpose of this juried exhibition is to showcase local emerging contemporary artists, create a platform for critical discourse through an exchange of ideas, and to push the boundaries of an age-old practice. In addition to the exhibition, the Juror will give a lecture about their personal work and practice. The artist lecture is open to the public and funded by the Communications, Arts & Humanities Division at Delaware County Community College.

This year’s juror is Jean Shin. Born in South Korea and raised in the United States, Shin attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and received a BFA in Painting and an MS in Theory, Criticism and History of Art, Design and Architecture from Pratt Institute, New York. Her works have been exhibited at more than 150 museums and cultural institutions, including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC.

Jean Shin is nationally recognized for her monumental installations that transform castoff materials into elegant expressions of identity and community. Working in a variety of mediums, she collects vast accumulations of singular objects—prescription pill bottles, sports trophies, sweaters—which she alters into conceptually rich sculptures, videos and site-specific installations. Distinguished by her meticulous, labor intensive process of amassing her materials from various communities, her arresting installations reflect the individuals’ personal lives as well as collective issues that we face as a society.

Her work has been widely exhibited in major national and international museums, including New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Art and Design, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Asia Society and Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, Sculpture Center, Socrates Sculpture Park, and Frederieke Taylor Gallery in New York City. Site-specific permanent installations have been commissioned by the US General Services Administration Art in Architecture Award, New York City’s Percent for the Arts and MTA Art for Transit. She has received numerous awards, including the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Architecture/Environmental Structures (2008) and Sculpture (2003), Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Art Award. Her works have been featured in several publications, including Frieze Art, Flash Art, Tema Celeste, Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, Artnews, and The New York Times.

Jean Shin currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Learn more about the artist on her website.
